BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Bellingham police have arrested a man wanted for the murder of a 31-year-old Bellingham woman.

On Feb. 8, officers were called to the 1000 block of North State Street at about 9:30 p.m. for a welfare check. When they arrived, they found a deceased woman in a stairwell with a gunshot wound.

BPD crime scene investigators and detectives and the Whatcom County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene to investigate. They determined that the woman died as a result of the gunshot wound.

In the following days, detectives identified the suspect as Shilo A. Englert, a 33-year-old man who lives in Bellingham. As a result of their investigation, detectives determined probable cause for Englert’s arrest.

Police said they received credible information regarding Englert’s location Sunday morning.

Officers first attempted to arrest Englert around 1 a.m., but he was alerted to the presence of law enforcement officials and ran away.

Later that morning, officers were able to locate him at a residence located in the 1400 block of Moore Street.

The BPD SWAT team was called to the scene and made several announcements to Englert, telling him that he was under arrest.

Chemical irritants were deployed after Englert ignored several additional warnings from police. He then surrendered and was taken into custody without incident.

BPD crime scene investigators and detectives remained at the scene to check for evidence.

Englert has been booked into the Whatcom County Jail on suspicion of murder in the second degree.
