Missing boater

MERCER ISLAND, Wash. — A 19-year-old boater who went missing on Lake Washington during Seafair has been recovered by Mercer Island police.

The boater on the water for Seafair on July 31.

Acting Mercer Island police chief Jeff Magnan told KIRO 7 on Aug. 1 that a group of people had been boating around the lake for hours Friday when a 19-year-old went overboard somewhere between the log boom and the I-90 bridge.

When the boat reached the bridge and slowed due to the restricted speed zone, his friends realized he was gone, Mercer Island police said.

Multiple agencies responded to search for the man, but some of the search efforts had to be called off due to lack of light and FAA regulations during Seafair, officials told KIRO 7.

Investigators used cell phone location data from the victim’s phone to narrow their search. Using sonar and an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV), search teams located the victim in approximately 150 feet of water in Lake Washington on Aug. 13, the Mercer Island Police Department wrote.

The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
