Boy swimming unsupervised nearly drowns in Martha Lake

MILL CREEK, Wash. — An 11-year-old boy was rushed to Children’s Hospital Monday evening after nearly drowning in Martha Lake, just west of Mill Creek.

The boy apparently was swimming near several other children but without adult supervision or lifeguards.

He was missing several minutes before 911 was called around 5:30 pm.

Firefighters estimate the boy was found by divers 50 minutes after he went under.   He was found in 6 to 7 feet of water.

Rescuers pulled him to the surface and began resuscitation efforts before transporting him to the hospital in extremely critical condition.

There is no word on his identity or home town.

Divers say the water is still shockingly cold in deeper areas.

“The top 3 to 4 inches is hitting 60 (degrees).  But then we’re back into the 50s and lower,” said Rodney Rochon with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.

Rochon said children the victim’s age need supervision, something neighbors say doesn't always happen at the beach.

“You’ve got to watch them all the time and that’s your sole function. And you do that until somebody else comes and takes your place,” said Rochon.
