Police are investigating how a car ended up slamming into the Plum Delicious restaurant in Renton.
Firefighters were called to the 3200 block of Northeast Sunset Boulevard for reports of a car that crashed into a building.
Sergeant Craig Johnson with the Renton Police Department said the driver was heading west on Sunset and left the road, took out a pole and continued about 150 feet, slamming into the restaurant, injuring seven people.
“The majority of them were at one booth on the other side of the wall where the vehicle impacted,” Johnson said. “Don’t know the conditions. When they were here they had mostly lacerations to their heads and faces, what I’d classify as moderate injuries.”
The driver was also hurt.
Firefighters said the building is “possibly compromised,” and that eight people are in serious condition.
It is not clear how or why the driver left the road or even how fast the person might have been going.
Marianne Johns, a former Plums worker, said speeding has been an issue on the road for quite some time.
“Cars drive by there like too fast, way too fast,” Johns said. “You always wondered if they were going to come through because they speed by so fast.”
Police closed the road to reconstruct the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.
