REDMOND, Wash. — A 20-month-old boy who fell six stories from a window on the top floor of a Redmond apartment complex was in serious but stable condition Wednesday night, after landing on the roof of a parked car.
"There are a lot of things that came into play that allowed that child to land on the car the way that he did," said Redmond police spokesman James Perry. "The boy landed in a way where the car absorbed enough of the impact that he was awake and crying when paramedics arrived."
Perry said the toddler was alone in a bedroom, while his mother and two siblings were in another room. "The window apparently was opened by the mother to air out the room," he said.
When the car's owner saw the deep dents where the toddler crash-landed onto the roof of his Mazda, he found it hard to imagine the child survived.
"That's a big dent," he said. "I couldn't believe it."
When asked if he believed in miracles, Ed Lu replied, "You know, I can't say that I do normally, but this time I don't know how else I could term it, the child to land on the car the way that he did."
Lu says despite the rain on Wednesday morning, he decided to ride his bike to Microsoft, and left the car in his parking space, right below the sixth-floor window.
"We're all lucky I guess that I biked in today rather than driving in to work," Lu said.
