BELLEVUE, Wash. — The city of Bellevue is investing $450,000 in a new “safe parking lot program” for people living out of their cars.
The pilot program would capitalize on 37,000 square feet of city-owned land that backs up to I-405.
Bellevue’s Homeless Outreach Manager, Nico Quijano, says the property is ideal for several reasons.
“Having a bus line nearby, nearby services, a surrounding community, grocery stores, all the things a person would need to be connected are essential for getting people on the right track, which is why this location will work for us,” said Quijano.
He also says the area is already well adapted to the needs of the houseless population.
A shelter is already operating on the property and houses roughly 150 men. Those living there will soon be relocated to a larger transitional facility under construction in the Eastgate neighborhood.
Once they do, the city will use one of the buildings for the pilot program. Those staying in the lot will be able to access showers, laundry and small kitchens there.
“We’ll give folks the opportunity they need to start branching out and thinking about what comes next,” said Quijano.
