ANACORTES, Wash. — The Coast Guard and local responders rescued more than 20 people participating in a paddlecraft race Saturday morning, officials said.
The race was organized by a local paddlecraft organization, with more than 75 people participating.
The Coast Guard received multiple reports of distress around 9:30 a.m. that several kayak and paddlecraft users capsized during the Deception Pass Challenge.
It was estimated that 15-20 were in the water due to high winds during the race, officials said.
A Coast Guard crew was already on scene and used an 87-foot patrol boat to recue 5 people from the water and assist 20 kayakers to shore. Another crews recovered two people from the water and helped 10 kayakers.
There were no injuries reported.
