Council approves hazard pay for grocery workers in unincorporated areas of King County

The King County Council voted 8-1 on an ordinance Tuesday that will provide $4 an hour in hazard pay for grocery store workers in unincorporated areas of the county.

Some cities, including Burien and Seattle, already enacted hazard pay on the municipal level. This ordinance would provide the pay boost for workers in the unincorporated areas of the county.

The ordinance will go into effect March 22.

The pay increase applies for the duration of King County Executive Dow Constantine’s emergency proclamation for the COVID-19 pandemic.
