COVID-19 test appointments in high demand as travel increases

If you’re vaccinated and looking to travel outside of the U.S., you may need to get a COVID-19 test. But the desire to vacation is leading to issues at what few testing sites remain.

If you need a test, you should not wait until the last minute to book an appointment. Testing sites like the one at Bellevue College are feeling the pinch as travel increases.

To visit Canada, anyone 5 years old or older must provide evidence of a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of arrival. Canada is one of several countries that has this requirement.

KIRO 7 spoke to a Canadian woman who said backup at testing sites is keeping her from getting home.

“I might have to stay here for another day or two if need be, but I’m going to check if I can get another test, then possibly be able to get my results within the next few hours,” said Jasmeet Tchetcy.

Not just any test will do, though. In most instances, you’ll need an acceptable molecular test instead of an antigen test, which historically has been more common.

Under this criteria, a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) or NAAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification) or rapid test would be acceptable. Looking online, the cheapest rapid molecular test is priced at about $150. A PCR test with results returned within an hour of it being taken is about $300.

Some insurance plans may cover such tests, but you’ll have to pay up front first.
