TACOMA, Wash. — In Pierce County fire crews battled a metal scrapyard fire in the Tacoma Tideflats on Sunday.
The big plume of smoke was visible miles away. Tacoma Fire said the fire started just before 7 a.m.
Arriving crews couldn’t reach the heart of the fire due to debris being in the way. So, workers at the scrapyard used their own equipment to separate unburned piles so that fire crews could put out the flames.
The fire is extinguished but a cause is under investigation. Firefighters said they will stay at the scene to tackle any remaining hot spots.
