STEVENS PASS , Wash. — Work will begin Monday on nearly 9 miles of damaged pavement over the summit of Stevens Pass, where there are severe potholes and rough conditions.
A Washington State Department of Transportation crew will repair the section starting 2 1/2 miles west of the Stevens Pass Summit at milepost 62 to milepost 71 near the Stevens Pass Nordic Center.
The work will happen Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. starting east of the summit at milepost 71 and working westward.
A reduced speed zone has been in place on the section of the road since early April because the weather was too cold to make repairs. WSDOT officials said it’s now warm enough to use a hot mix asphalt treatment.
Depending on where the crew is working, there may be flaggers, a pilot car or lane shifts. WSDOT said drivers should expect longer travel times and delays up to 20 minutes when flaggers and the pilot car are being used to control traffic.
Current and planned traffic control will be updated on the travel alert page and on Twitter @WSDOT_East.
The road work may be temporarily stopped for cold weather or rain.
The work will stop for the week after Memorial Day to accommodate holiday travel and resume the week of June 7. The work is expected to be completed June 17.
