Deadly wrong-way crash in Auburn closes eastbound SR 18 for hours

AUBURN, Wash. — A wrong-way driver is under investigation for DUI and vehicular homicide in Auburn.

The eastbound lanes of SR 18 near 312th Street are back open after a person was killed in a wrong-way crash.

Shortly before midnight on Thursday, dispatchers began receiving calls about a wrong-way driver who crashed into another driver. A third car drove over debris from the wreck and punctured a tire.

Both cars involved in the crash were severely mangled. A 27-year-old Gig Harbor man who was hit by the wrong-way driver died at the scene.

The driver who the Washington State Patrol says caused the crash, a 38-year-old Bellevue man, was taken to the hospital.

The eastbound lanes of the highway were closed for 4.5 hours. The lanes reopened at around 5 a.m. Friday.
