CLALLAM BAY, Wash. — Deputies with the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a stabbing involving two inmates at the Clallam Bay Corrections Center.

Officials said the stabbing occurred around 7:45 a.m. on July 4 in the Brown Pod dayroom located within the prison’s Delta Unit.

Arriving deputies said they found an edged weapon laying on the ground at the scene.

After interviewing witnesses, deputies said they suspect that Brian D. Rivas, 26, stabbed Trenton J. Johnson, 29, with a shank.

Officials said Johnson was stabbed in the back.

The wound was described by the prison’s medical staff as being superficial and officials said it did not require him to be taken to the hospital.

"DNA samples obtained from the victim and suspect will be sent to the Washington State Crime laboratory for comparison with any DNA which may be found on the edged weapon," a spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office wrote in a news release.

Deputies said Rivas is currently being instigated on charges of possession of a deadly weapon within a state correctional facility and second-degree assault.
