SAMMAMISH, Wash. — A driver who was found asleep behind the wheel of his running Mustang asked deputies what city he was in when they woke him up last Wednesday night, the King County Sheriff’s Office said on its Facebook page.

At 8:42 p.m., a Sammamish deputy in the 500 block of 216th Avenue NE saw a Ford Mustang stopped on the side of the road with its lights on and engine running.

Because it was dark and raining, the deputy said he was concerned the car could be hit, so he stopped to check on the driver, who appeared to be sleeping.

The deputy called out to the driver a few times and knocked on the driver’s side window, but the driver continued sleeping.

The window was open enough for the rain to have soaked the left side of the driver’s clothing, indicating that the car had been parked there for quite some time, deputies said.

While at the window, the deputy said there was a smell of marijuana from the car and he saw a plastic sandwich bag that appeared to contain marijuana.

When a second deputy arrived and repeatedly called out to the sleeping driver, the driver finally woke up and asked what city he was in.

A deputy asked the man for his driver’s license and registration, but the driver was unable to immediately find it. At times, the driver had to be reminded of what he was looking for, according to the sheriff’s office.

After performing poorly on a field sobriety test, the driver was arrested.

A deputy who went to roll up the car’s window discovered a clear plastic container containing what was suspected to be methamphetamine, as well as a plastic Tylenol container with 12 Xanax pills inside, the KCSO Facebook post said.

A warrant was obtained to get a blood sample from the driver, who was then booked into the King County Jail for investigation of DUI/physical control, which means a driver is impaired while behind the wheel of a vehicle that is not moving but the keys are in the ignition.
