A Pierce County deputy fired shots at a driver in Spanaway during a chase early Thursday.
The Sheriff’s Department said the deputy tried to pull over a reckless driver about 3 a.m., but the car sped away.
Sheriff’s Department spokesman Detective Ed Troyer said the deputy was able to briefly stop the fleeing car by ramming it, but the driver then drove toward the deputy.
“Unfortunately, the driver decided to drive back at our deputy and the deputy fired some rounds at the vehicle,” said Troyer.
Troyer said the driver, who was not hit but the gunfire, kept going. He turned the corner and hit a guide wire on a telephone pole, which caused the car to fly into the air and land upside down on Military Road, just east of Pacific Avenue.
The man then got out and ran. A police dog tracked the suspect and he was found a few blocks away.
The 26-year-old man was taken to the hospital for minor dog bites. Troyer said he has felony arrest warrants.
The deputy was not hurt.
Military Road is closed at the scene for the investigation.
