Details released on bomb threat that shut down Leavenworth last week

LEAVENWORTH, Wash. — The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office released details Saturday about a bomb threat that shut down U.S. Highway 2 in Leavenworth last week.

At around 4:46 p.m. on March 24, dispatchers reported getting a call from a man who said he left a package wrapped in a black trash bag in a garbage can across from the Rhein Haus in the 700 block of U.S. 2 in Leavenworth.

The man said he had an analog clock attached to the package, and though he never said the package contained a bomb, he insinuated it was several times during the call, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

The man then called the Icicle River Brewery and The Wok About, saying he had placed a package in their businesses, and that they should leave immediately.

Members of the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, Chelan County Fire District 3, the Washington State Patrol, Washington State Department of Transportation and Chelan Roads quickly evacuated the area.

Roadblocks were set up and both directions of traffic were diverted around Leavenworth.

A command post was established and two WSP bomb K-9 teams were called to the area from Marysville.

Once the teams arrived, they searched the entire downtown area, sweeping all garbage cans and areas around them.

The teams then searched the Icicle River Brewery, the Wok About and the Rhein House.

No suspicious packages were located.

After a thorough search of the area, authorities reopened the area.

U.S. 2 was reopened at 9:12 p.m.

The investigation continues.
