SEATTLE — The wrecking crew could be coming for an iconic Seattle music venue.

Developers have filed documents indicating they hope to replace the Showbox with a 44-story tower.

The Showbox opened 79 years ago this week and is a mainstay of the Seattle music scene.

"It's shocking that something that means so much to local history is being threatened by developers," said Tiffany Jorgensen of Friends of Historic Belltown.

Wednesday morning she learned of plans to build a 44 story tower on the property.

Documents newly-filed with the city refer to the project as Onni Showbox and propose a residential building with 442 units and 88 parking spots with retail space on the ground floor.

"We believe that it has all the potential for being landmarked," Jorgensen said.

Her group will try to get the venue designated a historic landmark in hopes of saving it.

She says the best scenario would be to have the interior designated a landmark, as well as the exterior.

A change.org petition supporting landmarking the Showbox is quickly gathering signatures.
