DOH: 3 flu-related deaths reported in WA thus far

WASHINGTON — For the first time in roughly two years, multiple flu-related deaths are being reported in the state, the Washington State Department of Health reported Wednesday.

According to a report from the state, three people, all age 65 and older, died from influenza after testing positive.

Flu activity has increased to moderate levels, officials said.

Health officials said flu activity was historically low last season, likely due to increased COVID-19 precautions being practiced.

The last time a flu-related death was reported in the state was during the 2019-2020 season. During that time, there were 114 influenza-associated deaths, including 36 deaths that were reported.

As the pandemic continues, Tao Sheng Kwan-Gett, MD, MPH, Chief Science Officer, said, “Hospitalizations across the state remain high due to omicron, and other respiratory viruses like influenza could overload them even more.”

“Take steps now to get you and your family vaccinated against the flu. Vaccination will help keep you and your family healthy and out of the hospital, especially those with chronic health conditions.”

Officials said by getting both the flu and COVID-19 shots, a person’s risk of getting infected with both viruses can be reduced.

Health officials recommend everyone 6 months and older get a yearly flu shot to prevent severe outcomes.
