SEATTLE, Wash. — Roads across Western Washington are slick again today as temperatures stay low. Whether you’re just commuting to and from work or heading up to Stevens Pass, the type of tires you use makes a difference.
Experts say having the right tires could prevent you from spinning out on the passes, and tire centers across the area are packed with customers trying to find the right match for their kind of car.
“This time of year is massively busy for us. As soon as we get some weather on the road, that includes anything icy, slick, any sort of adverse weather, it increases business for us,” said Andrew Jackson, a Store Manager at Les Schwab.
Jackson tells KIRO 7 that even though icy roads are tricky, you can avoid becoming a victim.
“You can’t overcome a lack of traction,” he said. “If your tires are not adequate for road conditions, you will find yourself at a loss for the ability to control your vehicle.”
Some drivers on Snoqualmie Pass found themselves in that situation Tuesday.
“We are barely inching forward and we slam into them I’m telling her to brake and she’s breaking it’s just the ice it’s so slick that no matter how good of a driver are you can’t beat it,” one driver told KIRO 7.
Jackson says there are options to fit every need, while still being safe.
“You have all season, all-weather, winter, studless, and studded,” he said.
According to Consumer Reports, people who drive in snowy conditions regularly or those who just want the best grip possible in wintry weather should consider winter/snow tires. They provide optimum grip to stop, go, and take sharp turns on snow or icy roads.
These tires are suitable for any vehicle—front-, rear-, or even all-wheel drive—but Consumer Reports says it is important to always use them in sets of four for the best grip and balanced handling.
While you’re getting tires, Jackson suggests winterizing your wiper fluid too.
“You want negative 32-degree fluid it can freeze in those thin lines and cause in-operation of the spray dispense,” he said.
He tells us the proper tires and car care will decrease the likelihood of sliding into a scary scenario.
“An ounce of prep is worth a pound of cure if you can take the time or stop by and see us.”
We have below-freezing temperatures most mornings this week, which means a refreeze is possible and you could have traction issues for the next few days. That’s why KIRO 7′s meteorologists have extended their PinPoint Alert through Thursday.
