REDMOND, Wash. — A new light rail link extension is opening in Redmond this spring! Sound Transit leaders say the two new stations are set to open on May 10.
The 2 Line Link extension will run to Downtown Redmond and Marymoor Village. The 2 Line route, which opened in 2024, connects Bellevue and Redmond with eight local stops. Sound Transit hopes to connect Bellevue with Seattle across I-90 next winter.
Community members say this is a game changer for Redmond commuters as Sound Transit leaders offer yet another opportunity to ditch the I-5 traffic and take public transportation instead.
“I was excited when I saw they’re testing the actual train itself, we are super looking forward to it,” said Jonathan Jamison, who lives just steps away from the new downtown rail station.
“One of the reasons I moved here was the proximity to light rail. I’m super excited to see its opening,” said Jamison, “I hate driving, and being able to just take the light rail into Bellevue will be super convenient for me and my wife.”
Jamison says he predicts his car will often sit in the garage after the station opens. And soon, Jonathan and his wife will have more options, as the extension projects continue.
Rachelle Cunningham with Sound Transit is looking forward to new Link stations connecting cities across the region.
“When you cross Lake Washington — people will get to the airport, get to Lynnwood, out to the east side,” promises Cunningham.
She says people should watch out for updates as they wrap up those projects too.
Sound Transit welcomes anyone who wants to attend the opening ceremony on May 10 and will release more details for that day closer to the event.
