Driver shot crossing First Avenue South Bridge in South Seattle

SEATTLE — Seattle police say gang unit detectives are investigating after a driver was shot in the leg while crossing the First Avenue South Bridge in South Seattle early Friday.

Seattle police say it is not known if the shooting is connected to a December shooting in the same area that caused a teenager to lose his sight.

In that case, a family was driving on southbound SR 509 just south of the First Avenue South Bridge when the front passenger window of the family's vehicle was shot out. Their son, 14-year-old Andy Isidoro, was shot in the head and subsequently lost his vision.

In Friday's incident, officers said were approached by an 18-year-old man in the 2600 block of South Holly Street at 1:20 a.m. where he showed them a gunshot wound to his calf.

He told officers he had been driving on the bridge when he heard several gunshots.  One round entered his vehicle through the driver’s side door, hitting him in the leg.

Police said the victim was unable to provide any suspect description to officers, and Seattle police have not said whether the shot came from another vehicle on the bridge or from another location.

The victim was taken to Harborview with non-life-threatening injuries.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Seattle police tip line at 206-233-5000.

There have been other reports from people in the area who said their vehicles have been struck by gunfire over a period of months. Most occurred in the area of SR 509 and South 160th Street in the Burien area.

A task force was created in response to the shootings that is currently investigating 11 random shootings in the Burien-SeaTac area.

Anyone with information about any of the shootings, or who has had property hit by gunfire in the area, is asked to call 425-401-7880 or email SR509shootingtip@wsp.wa.gov.  Tipsters may remain anonymous.
