A Seattle couple’s 10th wedding anniversary trip in Mexico took a tragic turn when a drunken driver crashed into them.

Tim and Cote Soerens were spending time together Saturday night when the crash happened. According to a crowdfunding post, the driver had the car lights off and drifted into the wrong lane.

The couple went to the hospital with serious injuries. Cote has six broken ribs and internal bleeding.

Friends wrote in a crowdfunding post that the Soerens have dedicated their lives to helping many people and communities.

Now the community is giving back; their YouCaring account has raised more than $35,000 for their recovery process. See photos of the couple here.

The Soerens’ sons are home in Seattle with grandparents.
