Dying kitten rescued by King County deputy nursed back to health

KING COUNTY, Wash. — A King County sheriff’s deputy and his K-9 partner found a tiny kitten along the Duwamish River last summer.

Deputy Rich Dosio and his K-9, Brix, found the 2-week-old kitten abandoned and stuck in a pile of fishing net, severely injured and likely within hours of dying.

Hoping she could be saved, Dosio summoned Seattle Animal Control.

When Jon Wieringa with the agency arrived, he wasn’t sure if the kitten would make it. If she did survive, he believed she would probably lose her severely damaged front leg.

But Wieringa was able to save the kitten’s life with an IV injection. Seattle Animal Seattle nursed the kitten back to health with around the clock care.

Meanwhile, on Sept. 22, the deputy’s daughter was begging him for a kitten. Dosio never forgot about the tiny kitten he had found and had even told Wieringa with Seattle Animal Control that if the kitten lived, he wanted to adopt her.

Not only did the kitten survive, but she made a full recovery. The deputy got his wish and adopted the kitten. He named her IV, pronounced Ivy, because of the IV injection that Wieringa gave her that saved her life.

Dosio says IV is “very playful, naughty and loves to torment K-9 Brix.”
