CHENEY, Wash. — Interim Eastern Washington University president David May announced Thursday that students will not be required to be vaccinated from COVID-19 before returning to campus this fall.
In an email sent to all students and employees, May said the decision to get vaccinated was “not one that we can make for you” for various religious, medical or philosophical reasons.
Other local universities, like the University of Washington and Washington State University, recently announced requirements for COVID-19 vaccinations among students, and sometimes, faculty.
May’s email strongly encourages students to get vaccinated and asks everyone to take personal responsibility for their health and the health of others.
The email does point out if students choose not to be vaccinated, it may impact Eastern’s ability to safely return to campus and remain open throughout the fall.
There will be some easing of current restrictions for students that are fully vaccinated, and some areas and activities on campus will require vaccinations.
