Police locate van in fatal hit-and-run that killed woman in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood

SEATTLE — Seattle police have found the van they believe was involved in the Feb. 5 deadly hit-and-run, but they have yet to track down the driver responsible for killing Bari Hill.

According to Hill’s nephew Aaron Wood, the fatal collision happened that evening near the Safeway on East Madison Street. The 80-year-old grandmother was on her way to a family gathering. She never made it. Police say Hill was hit in an intersection just before 5 p.m.

“This didn’t have to happen, and the person who drove off, their act of driving off made it much worse,” said Wood.

Bystanders performed CPR on Hill with the help of a nearby off-duty SPD officer. Seattle Fire Department medics treated her at the scene before taking her to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.

On Feb. 6, Hill died as a result of her injuries.

Witnesses told police Hill was using a crosswalk to cross East Madison Street when the driver of a black van hit her. The driver was turning from northbound 22nd Avenue to westbound East Madison Street and was last seen heading in that direction.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call SPD’s tip line at (206) 233-5000.

Crimestoppers is also offering a $1,000 reward for any tips that could lead to an arrest. Anonymous tips can be given at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

“We understand that accidents happen and I don’t think we’re a vengeful group of people,” said Wood. “We really just want justice.”
