Evans Canyon Fire grows to nearly 76,000 acres

Evans Canyon Fire

The Evans Canyon Fire is being called the number one priority for firefighters in the Pacific Northwest.

Crews fighting the fire in Central Washington are making progress as they have lowered all evacuation notices from level three (leave now) to standby orders.

Officials said the fire has spread to almost 76,000 acres and it is 60% contained.

Crews are digging lines around the southwest line of the fire.

“They’re trying to box in this corner right here. And there’s a burnout operation that’s really visible from Naches and kinda the surrounding community. We’re trying to have a good control line down the ridge and around the bottom where there’s a dozer line down there,” said Aaron Rowe, operations chief of the Evans Canyon Fire.

While crews said their efforts are promising, for some it is too late.

More than a thousand families have already been affected by the fire, causing some to live in hotels.

Firefighters are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
