SEATTLE — Two female pedestrians are dead after they were hit by drivers in different Seattle locations Thursday.
The first happened at around 5:30 a.m. near the intersection of First Avenue South and South Lucille Street in the Georgetown neighborhood.
Police said Seattle Fire Department medics were already at the scene treating the victim when officers arrived.
Shortly after, the female victim was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Seattle Police Department Det. Judinna Gulpan.
Witnesses told police the driver was heading south when he hit the woman. It is not yet known if she was in the street or on the roadside.
Video from the scene showed two shoes in the middle of the road.
The 64-year-old man who had been driving was evaluated by an SPD drug recognition expert who said he showed signs of impairment.
He was arrested for investigation of vehicular homicide.
At around 7 a.m., a woman was hit and killed on Martin Luther King Jr. Way and South Morgan Street in South Seattle’s Hillman City neighborhood.
“We learned that the male driver, he was 65 years old, was driving southbound on MLK when he hit the female victim with his vehicle. We are still determining the factors of what led up to the collision,” said Gulpan.
The stretch of road is extremely busy for both cars and pedestrians.
“Look both ways as a pedestrian, and more importantly, as you’re driving. A little more attention to detail could literally save your life or someone else’s,” said neighbor John Lee.
Seattle Police are trying to determine if the weather was a factor in either the Georgetown or Rainier Valley collisions, but Gulpan did warn drivers that the seasonal changes for the fall should not be ignored, especially after two people were killed just hours apart in early morning collisions.
