Fire rips through units at Eastlake apartment complex

SEATTLE — A fire burned several units in an apartment complex located in Seattle’s Eastlake neighborhood Monday morning.

“It was just like, ‘Hey, everyone needs to get out,’ and then it just kept building and building,” said Eastlake resident Corbin Anderson.

Anderson lives right across from the apartments that caught fire in the 2200 block of Minor Avenue East. He said all the commotion woke him up at around 1:30 a.m.

“Looked out my window, and at that point, I had seen someone in the apartment but it was on fire, and then I ran out in my boxers probably looking like a crazy person and just yelling for people to leave,” said Anderson.

Neighbors who live off Minor Avenue and East Lynn Street said the massive flames ripped through several units. Anderson said that at one point, there was a loud boom.

“It hit a propane tank as they were kind of starting to get the hoses ready and we were all worried about it hitting this other place next to it,” said Anderson.

“You had fire trucks in the alleyway and lights, and I woke up and I’m like, ‘Is there anything in my building?’” said Eastlake resident Amy Yerrington.

Seattle Fire said no one was injured. Anderson said neighbors were quick to react and help out those impacted.

“I think the whole neighborhood came out with like blankets and water,” said Anderson.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and as the smell of smoke lingers, neighbors continue to check on one another.

“Everyone is texting each other like, ‘Are you OK? Did you see what happened on Minor?’ So it’s a really strong community in Eastlake,” said Anderson.
