Tacoma encampment fire

TACOMA, Wash. — Heavy smoke and flames billowed in the air Thursday afternoon in Tacoma after a fire that started at a large encampment area spread.

Firefighters were called before 3 p.m. to the 4800 block of South Burlington Way (the old Tacoma airport) off South 56th Street.

Fire officials said flames burned debris, tires and, possibly, a vehicle in addition to brush and grass.

No injuries were reported.

The Sounder south line train was interrupted but later resumed service.

The fire burned approximately 24 acres, fire officials said.
