Gig Harbor police arrest one in failed ATM theft attempt, $60,000 in damage

Gig Harbor police arrested a 57-year-old man early Friday morning after he allegedly attempted to steal an ATM from a bank on Pt. Fosdick Drive.

Around 3:00 a.m., a video security company alerted officers that two individuals were using a truck to try and steal the ATM from a bank in the 5300 block of Pt. Fosdick Drive.

Upon arriving at the scene, an officer observed two men attaching a chain to the ATM, which was connected to a rental truck.

When the officer challenged the suspects, they ran away.

Officers from Gig Harbor, Pierce County, and Kitsap County quickly set up a containment perimeter, and a K9 unit was requested from Kitsap County.

The K9 tracked one of the suspects across SR-16, where he was located hiding in some bushes near 5500 Olympic Drive.

The 57-year-old man was taken into custody, but the second suspect was not found.

The ATM and bank building sustained approximately $60,000 in damage.

The truck used in the attempted theft is believed to be stolen and was retained for processing.

The suspect in custody will be booked into the Pierce County Jail on felony charges of Attempted Theft and Malicious Mischief.
