Volunteers with the Salvation Army in Bremerton got a huge surprise after discovering a gold coin while counting donations from one of its red kettles Tuesday.

The 2011 Liberty coin was dropped in a kettle somewhere in Kitsap County, according to a release from the Salvation Army.

It was estimated to be worth $1,500.

“Honestly, our team didn’t recognize the coin at first,” Captain Lance Walters, Director of The Salvation Army in Bremerton. “They were counting the donations and put it aside as an unknown coin. Thankfully, upon further review, it was identified as something very special!”

According to the release, it is unknown where the coin was dropped, as there are 35 red kettles and bell ringers working throughout the county every day.

“I wish I could personally thank the person who donated this gold coin,” said Captain Walters. “I want them to know how much this gesture is appreciated, especially now, as we are behind last year’s donations for this time.”

During the holiday season throughout Western Washington, there are approximately 500 red kettles and bell ringers collecting donations.
