Gov. Inslee announces salmon recovery proposals

In a press conference in La Conner on Tuesday, Gov. Jay Inslee introduced several salmon recovery actions related to his 2022 budget and policy for Washington state.

The actions are meant to help restore salmon populations across the state.

A total of $187 million would be invested in salmon recovery.

The actions include protecting and restoring vital salmon habitats, investing in clean water infrastructure for salmon and people, and correcting fish passage barriers to restore salmon access to historical habitats.

Inslee requests building climate resiliency; aligning harvesting, hatcheries and hydropower with salmon recovery; and addressing predation and food issues for salmon.

Inslee would like to enhance commitments and coordination across agencies and programs, while strengthening science with monitoring and accountability.
