Gov. Inslee signs bill furthering protections for survivors and victims

Washington Governor Jay Inslee signed Senate Bill 5081 into law Tuesday, furthering protections of victims’ personal information.

The bill was sponsored by Sen. T’wina Nobles (D-Fircrest) and requested by the Department of Corrections.

Survivors and witnesses can request personal notifications when an incarcerated person is released from prison.

The new law will prevent a formerly incarcerated person from learning who asked for the notification by requesting that information via a public disclosure request.

A media release from Sen. Nobles said the new law will help prevent survivors and witnesses from risk or harm.

Legislators passed the bill unanimously in both the House and Senate.

It goes into effect July 23.
