Hammer-wielding suspect found inside Northgate bank after alarm

A 49-year-old man was arrested late Saturday night after attempting to burglarize a bank in the Northgate neighborhood, according to the Seattle Police Department.

The incident occurred in the 400 block of Northeast Northgate Way.

At 11:34 p.m., a 911 dispatcher received a report of a bank alarm going off.

Surveillance footage showed a male suspect inside the building. When police arrived, they discovered a large hole in the bank’s front door and heard banging noises coming from inside near the ATM.

Officers secured the area around the bank and made repeated announcements ordering the suspect to come out.

When there was no response, officers entered the bank and searched for the suspect.

They found the man in the teller area, sitting in a corner with a hammer on his lap. He was taken into custody without incident.

Police determined the suspect had forced his way into the bank with the intention of stealing money from the ATM, but his efforts were not successful.

The bank sustained damage to its entry doors, interior door, computers, monitors, and electrical system. No money was taken during the attempted burglary.

The man was booked into the King County Jail on suspicion of burglary.
