Two juvenile detention officers were injured during an escape attempt at the Lewis County juvenile detention facility Wednesday, according to the Chehalis Police Department.
The incident, which happened around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, involved two male suspects and led to the arrest of both individuals.
Police were called to Green Hill School in the 1200 block of Southwest Pacific Avenue after a report of an escape attempt.
When they arrived, officers learned that two female detention officers had been assaulted in the recreation area.
According to statements from detention staff, the two male juveniles tried to climb a fence in the recreation area.
When one officer attempted to stop them, one of the suspects began to punch her in the face.
As another officer came to help, one of the suspects took handcuffs from her and began hitting both officers in the head and feet after they had fallen to the ground.
One suspect, a 17-year-old male from Chehalis, was arrested at the scene.
He was booked into the Lewis County Jail on charges of first-degree robbery and first-degree attempted murder. He will also face charges of first-degree escape and third-degree assault.
The second suspect, a 16-year-old male, also from Chehalis, was able to escape the facility.
However, he was located at about 10:40 p.m. and returned to the juvenile facility, where he was booked for first-degree escape and third-degree assault.
The injured officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The Chehalis Police Department thanked the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife, and JNET for their assistance.
