It is easy to judge just how much snow fell on Snoqualmie Summit by the work this DOT maintenance supervisor is doing to clear out the Sno-Park.
Scott Montgomery says no additional storms are expected for at least 36 hours. But that should not lull drivers into a false sense of security.
"When we have storms and we get good weather in between storms, you know people can revert back to summer driving habits, which is fine," said Montgomery. "But they do need to realize that there can still be icy roads."
All restrictions for vehicles traveling I-90 across Snoqualmie Pass were lifted just after 9 Wednesday morning. And not a moment too soon for this delivery driver from Kent.
"It came across at 9:11 that there was no chains required," said Joe Brandfas.
"Oh, you waited for that?" Brandfas was asked. "That's right," he said, chuckling. "I don't want to crawl underneath my truck."
"I thought you guys were hardy souls who could do it underneath the truck," he was asked.
"Some of us," he said, smiling. "Not all of us."
Some drivers got on the road today in advance of another storm tomorrow.
"We originally were going travel over on Thursday, tomorrow," said Walter Barr, traveling from Puyallup to Yakima. "But I was looking at the weather report. Today looks better."
Indeed, the weather looks better for just about anything. A professional photographer is here to lead a group of snowshoers.
"This is probably an ideal day to go," said Erwin Buske. "And Friday looks like a good day also. It's only when it's actually snowing like 12 inches coming down. Then it becomes a problem."
As for avalanche concerns, that is not a big worry here at Snoqualmie Summit. But at Stevens Pass and Mount Baker, there is a concern especially in the back country.
If you plan to go into the back country, you're advised to check the avalanche conditions.
