Homeless Seattle man accused of luring teenagers with drugs, raping them

SEATTLE — A 60-year-old Seattle man who lists a homeless shelter as his address was charged in King County Superior Court with second and third-degree rape of a child.

The sexual assaults were alleged to have happened in the early morning of July 4 in Seattle’s Cal Anderson Park.

In charging documents, prosecutors said Edward Charles Smith “supplied drugs to two runaways ages 13 and 14, and then raped them both, one vaginally, one orally.”

Police said the victims called 911 to report the assaults and officers went to try to find Smith.

Officers said they found Smith in tent on the west sidewalk of the 1700 block of Nagle Place.

In a probable cause document, police said both the victims identified Smith as the man who sexually assaulted them and Smith was arrested.

Both victims were taken to Harborview Medical Center and completed a sexual assault kit.

The kit showed one victim suffered multiple injuries during the assault, police wrote in a probable cause document.

In a search OF Smith, officers said they found methamphetamine.

Smith was booked into the King County jail on investigation of child rape.

He remains in jail in lieu of a $125,000 bail. Smith’s arraignment, where he will enter a plea, is expected later this month.

Smith’s criminal history includes criminal convictions in Florida for drug possession, escape, and burglary, among others.

Smith also has convictions for theft in Washington.

“The defendant reported to court services that he moved to Washington from Florida, two years ago, staying either in shelters or in a tent in the Pioneer Square area of Seattle,” prosecutors wrote in charging documents.

Smith told court staff that he does not have a support system in Washington. It's not clear from court documents why he moved to Seattle.
