Hot weather continues with possible thunderstorms, flash flooding

SEATTLE — After record-setting high temperatures on Sunday with the chance to set more records this week, the hot weather is far from over.

There is also the chance for thunderstorms, heavy rain, and brief but gusty winds Monday night, depending on where you live. There is also a Flood Watch in effect.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Forecast

There are thunderstorms out there in the Cascade foothills as of 3 p.m., and these spotty storms will be moving west into the lowlands into this evening. The atmosphere is unusually primed for thunderstorm activity with hot daytime temperatures, some modest humidity, but plenty of instability in the form of cold air aloft. The storms will have the potential for plenty of lightning, heavy rain in spots (prompting a flood watch) and hail.

By 11 p.m. Monday, the thunderstorm chances will be just about gone as the instability fades with the loss of daytime heating. By Tuesday morning, expect a mix of clouds and sun, turning mainly sunny by mid-morning.

Highs Tuesday will be cooler than today but still in the lower 80s. Any showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon Tuesday should stay in the mountains. The coast and Strait will be cooler – in the 60s.

We’ll have more sun and a modest warm-up around Puget Sound to the mid 80s for highs on Wednesday and Thursday.

Some cooling takes place areawide by Friday into the weekend with highs in the 70s, generally. Expect some more clouds each day and a slight chance of rain showers around Sunday.
