How to check if King County roads have been plowed

KING COUNTY, Wash. — King County road crews spent Thursday preparing trucks for what could be several days of snow removal.

Round-the-clock work begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, as drivers cover more than 500 miles of roads in unincorporated areas.

“We’re really going to chase the snow depending on where it is,” said Jeremy Ferguson, King County’s Traffic and Road Maintenance Manager.

Plows and sand spreaders have been added to dump trucks, which will be filled with a mix of salt and sand to both melt ice and provide traction.

Many roads have already been pre-treated with anti-icer chemicals.

Because of budget constraints, not every county road will be plowed.

While all major arterials will be cleared, only about a third of the county’s entire road network will see the trucks.

Small, rural roads won’t be cleared at all.

King County has a map of snow routes, explaining how they are prioritized.

The county also has a map that shows which roads have been plowed, and how recently.

“It’s really best if you don’t have to be out and about, to just stay home and wait until the roads are clear enough to travel again,” Ferguson said.
