California is in a crisis – and many are wondering how to help our friends to the south as a series of fires tear through Los Angeles.
More than 10, 000 homes have burned, approximately 300,00 people are under evacuation orders, and at least 11 people have died.
There are hundreds of fundraisers claiming to send money towards recovery efforts, but how do you know if it’s real?
KIRO 7 spoke to Leigh Lehman, the Director of Communications for GoFundMe, about what people should look for.
She suggests asking yourself the following questions:
Is the title very clear?
Does the story on the fundraiser make sense?
Does the fundraiser clearly state how funds will be used?
Is the relationship between the organizer and recipient written out?
Are direct family friends, family members, and community members leaving donations and supportive comments?
Lehman says right now the most needed items are temporary housing, water, and clothes.
