Icy conditions and inclement weather caused a second day of travel delays and road shutdowns on Wednesday morning as drivers struggled to keep traction on Western Washington highways. Interstate 405 saw the worst of it, with multiple collisions causing all-lane shutdowns throughout the morning.

According to the Washington State Patrol, there were around 20 crashes up and down Interstate 405 throughout Tuesday morning, and the highway was shut down twice due to collisions. First, a semi-truck was cut off and spun out of control, crashing and catching fire, shutting down northbound I-405 lanes in Renton. Then, multiple crashes in an elevated area over I-90 shut down southbound I-405 lanes while WSDOT treated the road.

Trooper Johnson with WSP reminded drivers that it’s about slowing down, and asked travelers to delay their commute if they can.
