SEATTLE — A 70-year-old sign outside of the old Chief Seattle Motel is getting all-new attention. The motel has since been converted into apartments, but instead of advertising vacancies it now reads, "3 Cheers for Heroin."

Pete, a repairman for the property who did not want to give his last name to KIRO 7, is now considering taking the sign down after it was struck Wednesday morning by a hit-and-run driver.

Before Wednesday, the sign had advertised the free Georgetown Fair.

"People are sad to see the sign destroyed, but they say '3 Cheers to Heroin' up there is an attempt to poke fun at the situation," Pete told KIRO 7's Rob Munoz.

The owner of the property told KIRO 7 over the phone that he doesn't know for a fact it was heroin that led to the accident, but he says the new slogan was a primal reaction.

He now hopes his insurance will be able to help cover for the sign and once again light up Marginal way.

KIRO 7 will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
