In Washington state, there is a $1,025 fine for throwing a lit cigarette from a car.
The Washington State Patrol is reminding smokers of the potential danger of improperly discarding cigarettes as we enter wildfire season.
“As conditions continue to dry out across the state, the danger of fires caused by individuals discarding lit tobacco products or other lit material from their vehicles increase,” officials with WSP said.
Police will enforce the fine, they reminded residents Thursday.
“One careless action can quickly turn into a major fire,” WSP officials said.
