POULSBO, Wash. — A person was shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday night in Poulsbo, police said.
The shooting happened after 9 p.m. in the middle of a crowd at Waterfront Park during the city's Third of July fireworks celebration, Poulsbo police said.
On July 4, loved ones identified the man as Stonechild Chiefstick, 39. Chiefstick, who lived in Port Orchard, was a member of the Suquamish Tribe and a father of 5 children, according to friends.
Police said officers responded to a report of a person threatening people.
People reported a man was acting strangely, was armed with a screwdriver and was lunging at people, police said.
Police said people complained about the man's odd behavior around children and that he was not respecting others space.
One witness told police the man "just didn't look right, was just scoping everybody out and threatened a little kid with a screwdriver saying he is going to hurt somebody."
When the person was contacted by police, a struggle began, and during the struggle an officer fired his weapon, striking the person, officials said.
Police said the man was handcuffed and officers gave aid to the person while they waited for medics to arrive.
