Jolly Mountain Fire continues to grow despite cooler weather conditions

The Jolly Mountain Fire is still burning but is now 8% contained.

For four weeks since a lightning strike started the fire on Aug. 11, fire crews have been working to protect people, private residences, and roadways.

On Saturday, Sept. 2, Gov. Jay Inslee declared a statewide State of Emergency for Washington due to wildfires.

The fire has grown to over 26,300 acres, 11 miles northeast of Cle Elum. Winds coming in from the west at an expected 10 to 15 miles per hour could spread the flames to the east. Despite a chance of showers this weekend, the wetter weather is not expected to significantly impact fire activity.

This weekend, crews are taking advantage of the cooler temperatures and higher humidity. Haze lifted just enough for helicopters to support firefighting efforts from above.

Today, crews will focus on suppressing the fire along Cle Elum Ridge and communities east of Cle Elum Lake with over four miles completed.

Firefighters advise people evacuating the area to be prepared by remembering the five P’s: people (and pets), prescriptions, personal computers, photos, and papers.

The Red Cross shelter is located at the Putnam Centennial Center (Senior Center) at 719 E. St., Cle Elum, WA 98922.
