Lake Stevens approves decades-long plan to make sidewalks ADA-compliant

LAKE STEVENS, Wash. — A plan to make sidewalks more accessible in Lake Stevens has been finalized.

The new plan would take 23 years to complete and could cost up to $37 million.

According to a report by the Everett Herald, only 11% of curb ramps, 6% of sidewalks and 0% signal push buttons in Lake Stevens were compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The new plan would remove barriers to compliance.

The city has a total of 2,679 sidewalk segments, adding up to 137 miles, along with 3,095 curb ramps and 97 signal push buttons.

According to the city’s ADA transition plan, only eight of 137 miles of sidewalk were ADA compliant.

The plan has been submitted to the Lake Stevens City Council and Washington State Department of Transportation for approval.
