A Lake Stevens man is recovering in the hospital after losing his home and three puppies in a devastating fire on New Year’s Day.

“I pulled into the driveway. All I saw was the tires of my RV,” said Brett Pierce.

Pierce told KIRO 7 he had just gotten back home from a laundry trip with his dog Sunday when he found his home charred by flames.

He says the worst part was realizing his three 9-month-old puppies – Snoopy, Luke, and Duke -- were inside.

“I sped the car up real quick to get there as quickly as possible and jumped out of my car and yell for my puppies. And they didn’t come. I yelled again, they didn’t come I knew that they had been trapped in the RV,” he recalled.

Pierce says the fire marshal told him it’s possible the puppies died peacefully due to a freon leak. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

“The fire marshal says that if it was at night, the freon would just put me to sleep. So now that’s a little light in this. I’m thankful that Sunday and I are here to carry on in respect to Snoop, Luke and Duke,” he said.

Fortunately, Pierce had Sunday by his side at the time, who’s the mama to the three dogs. He says she’s been by his side for the past 5 years, and he’s never letting her go.

“I miss her so much. I just want right here. It’s gonna be incredible to see her,” he said.

Pierce says Sunday is being cared for by loved ones while he recovers at Providence Swedish Cherry Hill.

He says he’s being treated for blood clots after losing circulation from sleeping in his car after the fire. Pierce told KIRO 7 he’s grateful for the hospital staff’s support during this difficult time.

Pierce says New Hope Community Church is donating a new trailer so he has a home once he’s out of the hospital.
