SEATTLE — Sonics icon and NBA Hall of Famer Lenny Wilkens received a one-of-a-kind gift for his 84th birthday on Thursday.
His gift was unveiled outside the new Climate Pledge Arena. Wilkens joined Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan and others at the Seattle Center for the official unveiling of “Lenny Wilkens Way” at First Avenue North and Thomas Street.
Wilkens called the honor incredible.
“To get Mayor Jenny Durkan to support and create the idea that there could be a Lenny Wilkens Way, made me feel very good about that,” Wilkens said.
He paved the way for many people in the world of sports.
Wilkens called Seattle a great city and said he hopes the street signs will inspire young people to walk in his footsteps.
