SALEM, Ore. — A magnitude 4.4 earthquake near Salem, Oregon, was felt by people in Washington early Friday.
The quake happened about 37 miles south-southeast of Salem at 5:52 a.m.
“The earthquake was technically big enough to trigger part of the United States Geological Survey ShakeAlert system. But it didn’t meet the threshold to give phone notices. A 4.5 earthquake could have given a notice on the MyShake App,” the Washington Emergency Management Division said in a tweet.
WAEMD said the earthquake was big enough to be felt in southwest Washington.
As of 10 a.m., 4,400 people had reported feeling the quake. Some people in the Kalama, Washington area reported that they felt the shaking.
Anyone who felt the earthquake is asked to report it to the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network.
The ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning system is available for all mobile phones in Washington. It may provide seconds of warning to protect yourself before the shaking begins. Alerts are available through your Android phone’s built-in software, the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system on all phones, or on the MyShake App. Download the app here.
