SEATTLE — Seattle’s Northgate Mall will be losing Macy’s as one of its cornerstone tenants.
The retailer says it will close the store early next year.
The closure comes at a time when the mall's owner is looking to redevelop the area, adding housing and a training center for Seattle's new National Hockey League team.

Documents from Simon Property Group, Northgate’s owner based in Indianapolis, show the central open space where retail shops are now, south of Macy’s.
The Macy’s space is also designated as residential space over retail, though it’s unclear if there would be an addition on top or if the space would be demolished.
The Macy’s location, which was built as the Bon Marche, was the first part of Northgate to officially open in a live TV broadcast on April 21, 1950.
The Seattle Times reports Macy's will also close its store in Redmond Town Center.
